BUSINESS ART ― Office

The origin of your company, where you see it every day.

A painting in an executive office or reception room is one of the first things visitors see. It is also something the owner sees every day.

One painting that reminds you why you do this work when a decision is hard. That is the kind of original work I paint.

A decorated room, and an empty one

Psychologists Craig Knight and Alex Haslam at the University of Exeter tested how the way an office is decorated relates to how people work (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, 2010). They compared a bare "lean" room with only a desk and chair, a room decorated with art and plants, and a room where workers could choose the decoration themselves. The decorated rooms produced better results than the lean one.

As economist Tim Harford describes the study, people in the room they had decorated themselves got about 30% more done than in the lean office, and about 15% more than in the room that was simply decorated for them.

How people feel in workplaces with art

The 2022 "Art of the Workplace" survey of about 3,000 office workers in the UK, commissioned by Brookfield Properties and The School of Life, found that 69% of adults believe interesting and visually attractive artworks in the office positively impact their wellbeing.

In the same survey, 63% of 18- to 29-year-olds preferred working in the office to working at home, rising to 75% among those who work in offices with a lot of art.

What this tells us

What matters in this research is not only whether a room is decorated, but whether it reflects the people who work there. A space people helped shape becomes a space they care about, more than one chosen for them.

A commissioned painting follows the same idea. Because I paint after hearing your philosophy and what you have valued, the work on the wall is not a picture bought somewhere, but your company's own painting.

In the president's office and the reception room

The president's office is where big decisions are made alone. The reception room is where guests first feel the atmosphere of a company. In both, what hangs on the wall changes the impression of the room. A painting of your philosophy also opens conversations: a simple "What does this painting mean?" becomes a moment to share what your company stands for.

What kind of painting will it be?

I talk with you about why you started your business, the values you hold, and the future you want to bring to people.

I gather the words and feelings that come up again and again in our conversation, and turn them into color, form and light in one original painting.

Each painting comes with a letter that explains why these colors were chosen and what the work holds, so the story remains in words as well.

What I ask in our conversation

  • The size of the space, the color of the walls, and how the light comes in
  • What you would like visitors to feel
  • What you would like to share with your team

The Yoshida couple's inn (Kabira, Ishigaki Island, Okinawa)

An inn in Kabira, Ishigaki Island, run by Kengo and Sayaka Yoshida, hosting just one group a day. Kabira Bay is a three-minute walk away. It is a traditional Okinawan house with a Japanese-style room with tatami and a tokonoma alcove, and a large garden with mango and banana trees. On clear nights the sky is full of stars.

They choose things that are kind to people and nature, such as organic shampoo, additive-free soap and ocean-friendly detergent. Sayaka's home-cooked dinner (by reservation) and a plant-dye workshop are also available.

Kengo and Sayaka also run "Yoshida no Fundoshi," a brand of fundoshi (traditional Japanese loincloths). Using carefully chosen hemp and organic cotton dyed with natural plants, the couple make each piece by hand, from cutting and sewing to dyeing and finishing. The plant-dye workshop at the inn is connected to this craft. See Yoshida no Fundoshi on Facebook.

Sayaka also works as a visceral therapist under the name "Saaya." With the belief that "you are your own body's doctor," she offers visceral therapy sessions on Ishigaki Island (by reservation; visiting sessions are also available). See Saaya's visceral therapy page (Japanese) for details.

On Airbnb it is rated 4.87 from 173 reviews and is a Guest Favorite, in the top 10% of listings (as of October 2026). What guests mention most is the couple's hospitality: "their hospitality and down-to-earth personalities," and "a sense of ease, as if we had known them for a long time."
