Love alone is the true energy passed down across time.
Technique, Color & Expression
Usage of Artwork
More about this painting
Paintings that shine with gold
This painting is layered with yellow and gold light. Gold has long been used in art around the world as a color of eternity and of what is precious.
A particularly famous painter of gold is the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. "The Kiss," painted in 1907–1908 with real gold leaf, depicts lovers embracing in golden light, and it is held today at the Belvedere in Vienna. This period of Klimt's work is known as his "Golden Phase."
Japanese gold leaf and Kanazawa
Japan, too, has many beautiful arts that use gold: the Golden Pavilion, Buddhist statues, folding screens, maki-e lacquer.
Much of that gold leaf is made in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. Kanazawa produces nearly all of Japan's gold leaf, and the craft of beating gold to about one ten-thousandth of a millimeter is handed down by artisans. In 2020, the gold-leaf making of Kanazawa was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list as one of the traditional skills for conserving Japanese wooden architecture.
The shine of gold that does not fade for centuries is truly a symbol of "eternal radiance."
Starlight and time
Another theme of this painting is the stars. I painted countless stars circling, and particles of light streaming out in every direction.
The starlight we see in the night sky has taken years, centuries, sometimes thousands of years to reach Earth. The light we see now left its star long ago. When we look up at the stars, we are actually looking into the distant past.
The light within you that never fades
Yellow and gold for eternity and the brilliance of the soul, blue and violet for the stillness of the universe, pink for tenderness and love. In this painting each color overlaps the others and spreads on and on.
Like gold that shines for centuries, like starlight that travels for thousands of years — I hope this painting reminds you that within you, too, there is a light that does not fade with time.
