Concept & Background
Technique, Color & Expression

More about this painting
We are made of star-stuff
"We are made of star-stuff." The American astronomer Carl Sagan said this in the television series "Cosmos," broadcast in 1980.
It is a poetic image, and also a scientific fact. When the universe was young, there were only light elements such as hydrogen and helium. The carbon and oxygen that make up our bodies, the calcium in our bones and the iron in our blood were made inside stars over long periods of time, and scattered into space when those stars ended their lives.
That stardust gathered to form the sun and the Earth, and in time, life was born. In each of our bodies, fragments of stars that shone billions of years ago are still alive.
What shooting stars really are
The shooting stars that flash across the night sky are cosmic dust too. Tiny grains drifting through space plunge into Earth's atmosphere, heat up as they collide with the air, and give off light. Many are said to be about the size of a grain of sand.
The Perseid meteor shower in mid-August and the Geminids in mid-December are known as nights when many shooting stars can be seen. Such tiny stardust becomes such beautiful light.
A heart gently loosening
In "stardust," I layered acrylic paint many times and scattered bright pink, yellow, green and blue to create a texture where light softly sparkles.
The fine touches and overlapping colors represent a gentle time in which the heart gently loosens.
You, too, are a fragment of the stars
There may be days when you feel small, or feel you have nothing. But within your body are fragments of stars that shone long ago.
I hope that whenever you see this painting, you remember that you yourself are made of the light of the universe.
