Your life can still shine with even more light.
Concept & Background
Technique, Color & Expression
Usage of Artwork
More about this painting
The word "flare"
The "flare" in the title "Inner Flare" is an English word for a flame that suddenly blazes up, or a flickering light. The great explosions on the sun's surface are also called "solar flares."
In this painting I depicted the light of life that wells up from within and sometimes blazes up.
The "sea" within us
The blue and green of this painting represent an inner sea.
Most of the human body is water — in adults, roughly 60 percent of body weight. Perhaps our blood and tears taste a little salty because we carry something like a small sea inside us.
About 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by ocean. The deep sea is a quiet world where sunlight barely reaches. I painted the many layers of this work while sensing the vastness of time and space, like that deep ocean.
What water does for the heart
Many people feel calmer near the sea, a river or a lake.
In Europe, such waterside environments are called "blue space," and research on their relationship with health has advanced. Studies including those by the University of Exeter in the UK have reported that people who live closer to the coast tend to rate their own health as better.
The American marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols named the calm, contented state of mind we feel near water "Blue Mind" in his book of the same name (2014).
A quiet sea and a burning flame
In this painting, within the blue and green sea, I layered cherry-blossom pink for the birth and memory of life, and gold for the dignity of the soul. A quiet sea and a flame burning within — opposites at first glance, both are forms of life.
Deep in a calm heart, a light is still burning. I hope that whenever you see this painting, you feel the sea and the flame within you.
