Concept & Background
Usage of Artwork
More about this painting
What is a serenade?
A serenade was originally a song sung or played at dusk or at night beneath the window of one's beloved. The word is said to come from the Italian "sereno," meaning clear or calm.
Later, in classical music, it also came to mean a light instrumental piece played in relaxed settings. A famous example is Mozart's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik," written in 1787 — a serenade whose German title means "a little night music."
I painted "Serenade for the Soul" as a work I want to gently deliver to your soul, like a song played beneath a dear one's window.
The painter who painted sound with color
A painter known for connecting music and painting is the Russian-born Wassily Kandinsky. He believed that colors have a resonance like sound, and wrote that yellow can sound sharp like a trumpet, while blue resonates like a deep instrument.
In his book "Concerning the Spiritual in Art" (1911), he compared color to music to explain how it acts directly on the human soul. He is also known for naming his works with musical words such as "Composition" and "Improvisation."
A canvas where colors resonate
In this painting I built on warm reds, yellows and oranges and layered fresh blue and green light over them, so the colors resonate with one another as if sounds were overlapping.
By layering, scraping and repainting again and again, I created depth and transparency. A resonance that no single color can make is born from layering — just as many instruments together become one piece of music.
A night song for you
I would be happy if time spent with this painting in a quiet room at the end of the day became a small serenade for you.
Not with words, but with the resonance of color — may it be a painting that gently stays close to your soul.
